Comment, Trackback, and Referral Spam

Interview with a link spammer is an interesting read. This link was posted on the WordPress Forums when it hit the net. Sam the Spammer is an arrogant, self-serving, narcissistic buffoon, which is everything a spammer needs to be a spammer. Sam the Spammer tells us, the blogging community, to not take it personally but how does one not take it personally when we get hit by hundreds of his crappy sites? Sites that aren’t even live, what’s up with that? How can he possibly get anything out of spamming thousands of blogs with sites that have nothing on them? I think the idiot is doing it to annoy bloggers or gets some kind of sick cheap thrill out of hammering bloggers with his automated spam machine.
It wasn’t until I started getting hit with referral spam that the sites were live and had content, if you can call an affiliate link farm content. Hell, I don’t even publish my referral logs, so what does a spammer like Sam the Spammer get from hammering my referral logs? And I’m not supposed to take it personally? Right!
The only reason my referral logs were getting spammed was because nothing got through my Hashcash (formally known as The Spam Stopgap Extreme) plugin. It took almost a month to stop the referral spam from reaching my referral logs with this code I guess the spammer finally figured out that he was spamming his own referral logs. Now, he shouldn’t take it personal but I’m still giggling at his stupidity for allowing a month of his own referral spam to hammer his own logs! Well, no one said they were smart, smartasses maybe, but certainly not smart.
So what does the buffoon do upon discovering his referral spam wasn’t working … he starts spamming my trackbacks. One found it’s way into my moderation queue and some got through on a few blogs I manage for others. I just removed the trackback file and zapped the potential for getting spammed that way. Now I’m getting no spam of any kind, nada, zero, zilch and I’m a happy blogger once again.
Oh yes, the buffoon(s) are still trying. They’re trying to access my wp-comment files but are receiving a lovely 403 instead. The idiots are even trying to access my old b2 files. It just goes to show that they do not read the blogs they spam, even when their spam is turned back toward them. I suppose they could knock me off the net if they chose to but hey, that might not be a bad thing. LMAO!
